John L. Matthews Jr.

John L. Matthews Jr. passed away peacefully on July 4, 2021, at Aseracare Hospice, New Berlin.

He was 93 years old and born on August 8, 1927. Preceded by his wife, Therese (Magron) Matthews, He was a loving father of Christine (Matthews) Vollmer of Cedarburg, WI and Diana Matthews from Racine, WI. Two special nephews, Jim Michaels and Robert Michaels other loving nieces and nephews.

John will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a proud patriot and veteran of the U.S. Navy. He attended Trinity College and graduated from Northwestern University. He retired after a long career with Western Publishing, in Racine Wisconsin.

John was an avid military history buff who read widely and corresponded with veterans around the country, seeking out personal stories and details of their service. He lent his vast expertise to museums throughout the country and was an avid letter writer, sending envelopes stuffed with interesting newspaper clips and book excerpts to pen pals around the world.

As a young man he travelled throughout Europe, writing articles for U.S. publications, and satisfying a restless intellect and wanderlust that never abided. He collected and read countless books and magazines, never tiring of learning.

He will be greatly missed by his family and the wide network of friends he made throughout the world.

A Private family service will be held. Memorials to the family have been suggested.
