Our beloved mother, grandmother and friend Barbara Jean McCorkle Hicks went to be with the Lord on November 20, 2022, following an extended illness. She was born November 15, 1934, in Gates, Tennessee, to the late Iowa Bradford and Russell McCorkle.

Known for her punctuality and love of education, she graduated as valedictorian of her class at Lauderdale County High School in Ripley, Tennessee.

Barbara married the late Curtis Eugene Hicks in 1955, and their union was blessed with three children.

For Barbara, family meant everything. When asked for help, she would go above and beyond, and nothing was too much to request of her. She encouraged her children to act with integrity and to make decisions based on what is right.

She was a charter member of United Faith Missionary Baptist Church and served as its historian. She was also active in the church choir, singing alto.

In her spare time, she designed ceramics and baked delicious chocolate and pecan pies and peach cobbler.

Barbara was mild-mannered and had an easy-going nature but was no push-over. She made her position on an issue known and refused to participate in an argument. A testament to the grace of God, Barbara was the recipient of a donor heart and two kidneys that extended her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; one sister, Sherlene Hampton; a brother, Alvain Moody; and a dear great-grandson, Mekhi Lee Smith.

Barbara will be forever cherished by her daughters, Denise Jackson and Wanda Hicks of Racine; son, Ronnie Hicks (Karen) of Ellenwood, Georgia; grandchildren, Lakisha Hicks of Atlanta; Aris M. Claybrook of Racine; Auntavia Jackson of Racine; and Andre Hicks of Abilene, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and special friends Lettye Gray, Mary McLain, and Marian and Eugene Tharpe. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Lucy Curtis, Beverly Hicks, and Annie Hicks; a niece with whom she shared a special bond, Lorez Muhammad of Smyrna, Georgia;and a host of other special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services celebrating Barbara’s life will be held at the funeral home, Tuesday, November 29, 2022, 11:00 AM with Pastor Gregory Daniels officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends are welcome to meet with the family for Visitation, Tuesday, 9:30 AM until time of service. To view the service online, visit Barbara's page on the funeral home website, select visitation/services and then Live Stream.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to The Abdominal Transplant Clinic of St. Luke’s Medical Center, Milwaukee and Dr. Ajjampor Vidyaranya, nephrologist, for their loving and compassionate care.
