Life Story / Obituary
With his family by his side, Dr. Anthony “Tony” A. Herrmann, age 89, passed away peacefully at Ascension All Saints Medical Center, Friday, November 8, 2024. He was born in Racine on October 21, 1935, and is the son of the late Anthony and Gladys (Nee: Meyers) Herrmann.
Tony proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. On October 18, 1956, he was united in marriage to Maxine Madden, love of his life. Dr. Tony began his career as General Practitioner and was Corporate Medical Director with Johnson Wax and finished his career as the Vice President of Health Safety and Environmental Affairs for Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Headquarters for 20 years until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Tony was a lifetime parishioner and proud member of the choir of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was baptized. He was a member of the Racine Yacht Club, Racine Harbor Commission, and served as a Board member of St. Monica’s Senior Living Center, and was a lifetime advocate of all things Racine.
One of Tony's families’ greatest traditions was life on Lake Michigan. It began with Tony's father Tony Herrmann Sr. whose journey began as fisher folk from Jones Island in Milwaukee. Tony Sr.’s passion soon shifted to sailing, and we could only imagine that start began with a homemade raft, a homemade sail and homemade rigging. This led to Tony Sr. dominating regattas on Lake Michigan including the world famous, most coveted, Mackinac Race.
Circa the birth of Tony Jr. in 1935, he fell into the footsteps of his father Tony Sr. Beginning with an assortment of dingy class boats, Penguin, Thistle, Finn, Laser, e-scow and finally a step to the Olympic Class Starboat. Many championships were won in all the classes mentioned. Most dear to Dad’s heart and all his family was the companionship he enjoyed racing with all of his children and grandchildren and commemorated by a framed, 3-photo tribute to all who joined that famed club dubbed “Grandpa’s Hall of Famers”. He was a giant of a man, kind and impactful to everyone he came in contact with and will be dearly missed.
He was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by his wife, Maxine of 68 years; 7 children, Anthony (Cheryll) Herrmann, Christine (Myron) Kauers, Mark (Jennie) Herrmann, Therese Herrmann Ruhm, Matthew (Patricia) Herrmann, Eric (Paula) Herrmann, Michael (Tonya) Herrmann; 15 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sharon Woodworth; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria (Bud) Becker and brother-in-law, Jack (Patricia) Madden.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Dr. Tony’s life will be held, 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Kinzie Ave. Relatives and friends are welcome to meet with the family for Visitation, Monday, November 11, 2024, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the funeral home, and Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 10:00 am until time of Mass at the church. Memorials to St. Monica’s Senior Living have been suggested by the family.
