Life Story / Obituary
Joan (Joanie) M. Schultz, age 69, of Racine, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, with her husband by her side. Joan was born in Racine on August 16, 1956, to the late Roger and Charlotte (nee: Hanson) David. She graduated from Horlick High School and received a diploma as a medical assistant from Gateway Technical College. On August 17, 2024, Joan married Greg Moravec, the love of her life for the last 25 years. Joanie will be remembered for her love of family, tireless work ethic, quick wit, telling it like it is, and her ability to cook the most amazing food without ever looking at a recipe. Above all, she was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished aunt — more than anyone could ever ask for.
Joanie was intentional in everything she did. She chose to raise her daughter in the serene beauty of northern Wisconsin, close to family and friends, in a home whose door never stopped revolving — there was always room for one more visitor who needed fresh air, good conversation, and a home-cooked meal. She believed — truly believed — that the path to someone's heart was through their stomach, and she proved it over and over: through a catering business, a restaurant of her own, and a kitchen that never went cold.
A true jack of all trades — a David family trait — Joanie wore many hats throughout her life. She was fiercely independent and believed to her core that the only way to get anything in this world was to earn it yourself. Outside of work, she loved the sun and the outdoors — on the lake or in the yard by her gardens — usually with David Bowie, Billy Idol, or Dire Straits playing in the background. She was a devoted animal lover with room in her heart for stray cats, shelter dogs, and even a pet pig.
Despite her petite frame, Joanie had an oversized heart and was a force of mind, body, and soul — her spirit as vibrant as the flowers she grew, the fashion she wore, and the color of her hair. She said what was on her mind, whether you were ready to hear it or not. Yet beneath that boldness was a gift for finding beauty and levity in everything, even toward the end. All her life, and especially in her final months, she demonstrated immeasurable strength and always chose the path of truth, even when it wasn't easy — showing us all that we can do hard things, even when we don't yet believe it ourselves.
Joanie is survived by her loving husband, Greg Moravec, her daughter, Dani (Jameson Bothe) Schultz, stepchildren, Jacob (Lindsay Daum) Moravec, Greg Moravec Jr. and Benjamin Moravec, grandson, Silas Moravec, sister-in-law, Jeri David, brother-in-law, Jeffrey Moravec. She is also survived by the extended David, Nielsen and Schultz families, along with many dear friends.
Joanie was preceded in death by her mother and father, brothers John and Peter David, father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Anne Moravec (Wanenko).
The family wishes to thank the oncologists and the nursing staff at the Froedtert Hospital Clinical Cancer Center, along with Horizon Hospice for the care, comfort, and compassion they provided.
A celebration of Joanie’s Life will be held at the Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home (803 Main St., Racine, WI) on Friday, July 3rd, 2026, at 11 am. Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service at 11 am.
