Life Story / Obituary
Judith Lynn Smith, age 79, of Racine, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by the love of her family on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Born in Racine on October 7, 1946, she was the cherished daughter of the late Frank and Margaret (née Dudish) Orban.
Judi was a lifelong resident of Racine and a proud graduate of William Horlick High School. She had an entrepreneurial spirit, which she poured into opening a small children’s resale shop, The Frugal Frog, on High Street. Later in life, she followed her love of learning by returning to school to earn her master’s degree in education, an achievement she was deeply proud of. She put that education to meaningful use at Racine Unified, where she became one of the district’s first computer science teachers and later one of its first P5 coordinators. Judi retired happily from Racine Unified in 2009, often joking, with great pride, that she still had more than 200 unused sick days when she left. In retirement, Judi generously gave her time volunteering at countless Racine Zoo and Downtown events. She especially loved good company, a night out for dinner, and a glass or two of bourbon, straight, no ice.
She will always be remembered for the light she brought into every room and the laughter she shared so freely. Please raise a drink and reflect on a favorite memory or moment you shared with Judi.
Surviving is her sister, Jamie Brooks; son, Jason Smith (Barbara), grandchildren Zacc and Olivia, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Bill Brooks.
Private service will be held.
