Mary Karen Verbeten born on February 16, 1958, in Racine, Wisconsin, passed away on October 22, 2026, after a courageous battle with an autoimmune liver disease, with her loving and devoted son, Joshua Hamm, by her side. She was the cherished daughter of Betty Rae Toutant and Edward Roy Verbeten, and she is now reunited in peace with them, alongside her beloved infant son, little John Hamm, her cherished siblings Sue Verbeten and James Verbeten, and her lovely sister-in-law Julie Verbeten (Ed).

Mary's life was a testament to resilience and love, qualities that defined her journey.

She was a dear family member, survived by her son, Joshua Hamm, and daughter Michelle Fox. She is also survived by her step-mother, Karen Verbeten, siblings Ed Verbeten (Sharon Berardi), Barbara Bulgrin Helfenstein (Don), Patrick Verbeten (Lila), Nancy Verbeten, Sharon Feldmann (Mark), Kristine Freels (Jason), John Verbeten (Kris Butler), and Stephen Verbeten (Melissa), sister-in-law Kathy Verbeten Worthem, many cousins, nieces and nephews and special friend Kim Hendrickson, a lifelong bestie. In addition, she also survived by many of Josh’s friends that considered her mom. Her family was her pride, and her legacy lives on in the love and memories they shared.

After earning her degree in Data Processing, professionally, Mary excelled as an Information System Analyst, a career she pursued with dedication, until her diagnosis, working for Bon-Ton Stores (Boston Store, Bergner’s, etc.) and Johnson Controls. Even as her health waned, her spirit remained strong and her mind sharp, always seeking to understand the 'why' behind life's challenges.

As a talented seamstress, Mary found joy in helping others with sewing projects, sharing her skills and creativity generously. She cherished the camaraderie of her friends and faith community and the precious moments spent with family; activities she treasured deeply until her illness made them more difficult.

While well, Mary was an active member of her community, particularly through her involvement with the Moose Lodge in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where she served on the Women of the Moose Board of Officers. Her sense of belonging extended to the Journey Church community, where she found solace and comfort.

Mary is remembered for her incredible strength and the profound love she held for her family. She approached life’s adversities with courage, teaching those around her the power of endurance and hope.

In honor of Mary’s life, the family expresses deep gratitude to the compassionate staff at Froedtert Hospitals in Kenosha and Wauwatosa for their care during Mary’s final days. Their heartfelt message is simple yet profound: "You are forever in our hearts."

Mary's legacy is one of love, strength, and unyielding spirit—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her. May she rest in peace.

A memorial service will be celebrated Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 11:30 am at Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home, 803 Main Street, with Rev. Brett Cole and Patrick Verbeten officiating. Relatives and friends may meet prior to the service 10 – 11:30 am.
