Life Story / Obituary
With her daughter by her side, Mary L. Johnson, age 99, passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 29, 2025 at her residence. Mary was born in Natchez, MS on December 7, 1925, daughter of the late Paul and Cassie (nee: Dixon) McMorris.
She graduated from Brumfield High School “Class of 1944” and then attended Tennessee State University. Mary was united in holy matrimony for fifty-nine years to Robert L. Johnson, before Robert preceded her in death on February 6, 2005. From this union two children were born, Diane Johnson and Duane Johnson.
Mary and Robert moved to Racine in 1948. She was employed with American Motors Corporation for thirty years. Mary was a dedicated member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church-now St. Richard Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, traveling and shopping. Above all, Mary will be remembered for her gentle soul, her kind heart and her deep love and devotion to her family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was also preceded in death by her brother, Paul McMorris and one sister, Ernestine Knight, 5 sister-in-laws, 5 brother-in-laws, one daughter in-law Iris Johnson, lifetime friends, Borice and Sonny Fason of Collierville, Tennessee and Nan and Eddie Sanders of Chicago Illinois.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Diane Johnson of Racine, one son: Duane Johnson of Altadena, CA; one step-son, Robert (Glenda) Johnson of Chicago, Ill. ; two grandchildren, Brian (Lucy) Johnson and Karida Johnson, and two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; Elgin McMorris; Rhoda Jones, Kenny McMorris, Gordon Dickerson, Priscilla Jones, Maurice Ford, Jackie Patterson, Gregory Johnson, and Deidra Miller.
Duane and I would like to extend a special thank you to all of you. You kept her spirits alive. She loved talking to each and every one of you and was tickled pink by all the attention you gave her. We also want to thank you for never missing a birthday, or Mother’s Day with gifts, candy, flowers and her gum. She loved gum.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life Service will be held at the funeral home on Monday February 10, 2025, 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m.
