Life Story / Obituary
Megan Claire Houle passed away quietly at her home in Seattle, WA on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. She was born in Chicago on February 22, 1977, to Michael D. Houle and Camille M. (nee Benton) Houle.
Megan graduated from Tremper High School in Kenosha in 1998. Following graduation, she was employed first at Saint Joseph’s Home in Kenosha, followed by many years at Ridgewood Care Center. Megan then began a career working for Willkomm Companies, first at Burger King in Racine, later at The Dish Restaurant in Mount Pleasant. She consistently referred to her co-workers as her “friends at work”.
She was active in Special Olympics beginning in grade school and continuing into her adult life. Her chosen areas of competition were gymnastics, track events, bowling and bocce ball. Proudly, Megan was able to medal in each sport she attempted. Megan loved music and dancing. Whenever in the presence of her niece and nephew a dance party was always on the agenda. Megan was known for breaking out in song or dance at any given moment when she heard music. She enjoyed theater, especially any chance she got to see her favorite musical, Rent. Other interests included traveling on family road trips, going out to eat with friends, writing letters, and participating in occasional protests whenever given the chance. Megan’s passion for reading led her to become a readily recognized visitor at the Racine Public Library. She spent many hours browsing the books, especially in the large print section, and DVD and CD areas.
Her one desire was to live independently. In 2007 she moved into her own apartment and rode the bus to her places of employment and was able to remain in her Main Street apartment. After ten years, Megan lived in local care residences before deciding to move to Seattle to live with her brother and sister-in-law. With her relocation, she carried her passion for reading to local Seattle libraries. While living in Seattle, Megan continued to remain active, joining Seattle Parks and Recreation Specialized Programs. She participated in Sunshine Social, pottery classes and fitness. She was known for her performance of Katy Perry’s “Firework” with dance moves to match. Megan also enjoyed field trips to the beach and other social outings.
In 2022, Megan relocated to Dessie’s Adult Family Home where she received loving care from the dedicated staff who she considered family. They included her on weekly shopping trips and regular walks. Throughout her life, Megan continued to remain a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Green Bay Packers, keeping that family tradition alive even on the west coast.
Megan is survived by her parents, her stepfather Tom, her sister Laura, her brother Andrew and sister-in-law Amy, her nephew and niece Derek and Kennedy, many uncles, aunts, and cousins, and countless friends whom she cherished and remembered often with handwritten cards. Megan was preceded in death by her four grandparents and her stepmother Ruth Ann Schulz.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, November 14th from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a Celebration of Megan’s Life service to start at 5:00 p.m. followed by a meal at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Special Olympics Wisconsin, support.specialolympics.org and Seattle Parks and Rec Specialized Programs, arcseattle.org/specialized-programs-donations in Megan’s memory.
