After many years living with Alzheimer’s disease, Mildred Marie Miller (nee Uber), age 84, died on August 13, 2024, with her loving husband of 65 years by her side. She was born December 19, 1939, in Mercer, Pennsylvania to the late Levenia (nee Stewart) and Frederick Uber. She married Paul Thomas Miller at the Charleston Methodist Church in Charleston, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1959.

In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her in-laws, Helen (nee Javens) and Paul C. Miller, and one brother, Ronald Barkley. She is survived by her husband, her son Daniel (& Katherine) Miller, her grandsons, Eric (& Danielle) Miller and Justin Miller, and her great-grandchildren, Johanna, Bjorn, Tollef, and Liliana Miller. She is also survived by a sister, Marian (& Charles) Smart (nee Uber), and two brothers, Charles Barkley, and Frederick (& Judy) Uber, and her sister-in-law, Bronwyn (& Jerry) Pierce, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.

A 1958 honor graduate of Mercer High School, Mildred was a 1966 graduate of Slippery Rock State College with a BA in Elementary Education and earned her Masters of Education from Westminster College, all in Pennsylvania. She was licensed to teach K-8, a comprehensive library specialist, and a reading specialist. She thoroughly enjoyed her career teaching 1st grade students both in private Christian schools and in public schools in Western Pennsylvania and often wished she could continue teaching long after she retired.

Mildred was a faithful Christian believer. She was baptized in Charleston Methodist Church and later joined the Charleston Baptist Church, in Charleston, Pennsylvania, while she lived there, and played the piano for all services with her sister-in-law Bronwyn playing the organ along with her. While living in Racine, Wisconsin, she attended Community Christian Church and Grace Church.

After retiring in 1998 she joined her husband who had been transferred to Dallas, Texas, and worked at Trinity Industries with him. They spent five happy years in Texas. She often reminisced about that time saying it was her favorite place to live. They retired from Trinity in 2001 and moved to Racine, Wisconsin, to live in the same town as their grandsons. Mildred and Paul helped with transportation for them while they were in Middle and High School and attended all their music events. She was a grandmother who adored her grandsons. When they were small and lived in New York (and she in Pennsylvania) she and Paul made many trips to visit and help with them. Mildred also volunteered at the Racine All Saints Hospital in the gift shop. For many years, once they lived in Racine, she and Paul visited their son’s home every mid-day to take care of two Pomeranians, Breezy and Artie, during the dogs’ lives, which gave them all much joy.

The family is grateful for the care Mildred received at Parkview Gardens Memory Care and from Heartland Hospice. No service is planned, other than a family get-together later in the year. The interment of ashes will be at Mt. Washington Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Pennsylvania, in the future. Those desiring a link to her genealogy at ancestry.com should contact Dan or Kathy Miller.
