Life Story / Obituary
Robert William Ostergaard of Racine, Wisconsin, passed away after a nearly five-year battle with pancreatic cancer—a fight he met with determination, endurance, and a routine that remained impressively intact for as long as possible.
Robert was born to Lloyd Martin Ostergaard and Audrey Ostergaard (née Moungey). A lifelong resident of Racine, he made his home in West Racine, where he became something of a quiet landmark. He was best known for walking four miles a day, every day, a habit that made him familiar to many neighbors even if he never said much more than a nod or a brief greeting. Robert was not one for small talk, but he was known for a pleasant demeanor and a dry sense of humor that appeared sparingly.
He enlisted in the Army Reserves, a commitment well suited to his disciplined and structured nature. By trade, Robert was a draftsman, though those who knew him would say he had the mind of an engineer. He valued precision, consistency, and doing things the right way (his way) preferably the same way, every time.
Robert is survived by his son, Matthew Ostergaard, and Matthew’s wife, Maribel Ostergaard (née Hinojosa) and his brother, Scott Ostergaard. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew, Anhelica, and Martin, and a great-grandfather to Grayson, Mariyah, Liam, Nayeli, Ryder, and Melanie. He is predeceased by his former wife and mother of his son, Grace Ostergaard (née Raasch).
The family extends sincere gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at Ascension All Saints Cancer Center and Hospice Alliance. Their compassion, professionalism, and steady presence brought comfort and dignity to Robert during his illness and meant more to the family than words can adequately express.
Robert lived a life defined not by noise or spectacle, but by reliability, intellect, and steady forward motion—often measured in miles walked and fewer miles driven. He will be remembered for his discipline, his sharp mind, his understated wit, and for always being exactly where he intended to be, right on time.
There will be a service later in the spring. In lieu of flowers any contributions to the Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin are appreciated.
