He was born 19 minutes after his twin brother, Jerry Dean Smith. The twins were named by their mother’s cousin, Althea Reams. Their mother, Opaline Smith, was a charter member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Racine, Wisconsin. His parents encouraged the twins to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior at an early age. Both the twins attended Washington Park High School in Racine, Wisconsin.

Terry was employed at Styberg Engineering with his father, Amos Smith. Terry developed a strong relationship with Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby at St. Paul Baptist Church in Racine, Wisconsin. Vernnia Wright was called to be a pastor in Fargo, North Dakota. Terry joined Vernnia in Fargo, North Dakota to help him with the ministry. Terry was ordained as a Minister in Fargo, North Dakota. Shortly after he was ordained, his mother, Opaline Smith, became ill. Terry returned to Racine, Wisconsin to care for his mother.

While caring for his mother, he became friends with Jackie Lena Taylor and her daughter, Lena Taylor and Bishop Sedgwick Daniels. They help Terry cope with his mother’s illness. After the passing of his mother, Terry moved to Tennessee for a new beginning. While in Tennessee he met his wife of over twenty plus years, Charlotte Allen.
