Ode to My Father

In the heart of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, on October 16th, 1932, the birth of Alejo Figueroa Amador, son of Quintina Amador and Isabelo Figueroa, was recorded. A man of noble soul and tireless spirit, Alejo endured hunger, poverty, and trauma, but his bravery led him to migrate, working in the fields, factories, etc.

As an adult, Alejo completed his high school education. He became employed by JP Morgan Chase, where he started as a messenger. He was offered the opportunity to go to the University of Puerto Rico, prompting a promotion as an accountant, retiring nearly 30 years later.

Alejo was also a dynamic community leader presiding over La Hermandad de Cristo y Nosotros, assisting those confronting crises and financial difficulties. He was a founding member of La Cooperativa Jesus Obrero and presided over La Cooperativa de Guaynabo. Along with his wife Isabel they were members of Capilla San Juan Bosco, where he was active serving the community for many years.

Alejo's great source of joy was his children. He fathered eight children; five survive him: Moises (Zoraida) Figueroa, David (Candida) Soto, Ana Liz(Chauncy) Young-Figueroa, Myrna Iris Figueroa and Claribel (Luis) Camacho. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, Sisters Eugenia Figueroa and Aurelia Figueroa; brother Ignacio Figueroa; sisters-in-law Elsie Castro, Gregoria Figueroa and Brigida Ortiz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Isabel Garcia Rosa, four siblings, and three of his children.

Alejo enjoyed reading his Bible, praying with his rosary, playing dominoes, watching beisbol, and word searches. He held dear his memories of the countryside in Mamey I, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, planting vegetables and fruits, fishing, and cooking outdoors. Most importantly, he liked spending time with friends and family.

Alejo's life, a journey from Guaynabo to Racine, was a testament to resilience and endless love. He departed to eternal life on June 17th, 2024, leaving an immense void, but in our hearts, his legacy will live on eternally. Today, we celebrate you and honor you with this ode, noble man, beloved father, and guide of our lives; your spirit will continue to light our paths, constantly reminding us that with love and faith, everything is possible.

A memorial service will be held at Sunset Ridge Cemetery Chapel, 4300 Green Bay Rd, Kenosha, WI, on Monday, June 24th, 2024, starting at 11:30 am. Services will be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.

The family would like to thank Ridgewood Care Center staff for their care, with special appreciation to Dan, who always brightened Alejo's day.
