Life Story / Obituary
Fred passed away at home in the early hours of September 1, 2025. He was born near Aberdeen Scotland on May 31, 1944. He had two siblings – sister Wilma and brother Lawrie. Fred attended school in Lawrencekirk Scotland. He loved learning and really enjoyed sports, especially football (soccer). The love of the sport carried on into his coaching days at St. Catherines. He was coach for the Boys and the Girls Varsity soccer team at SCHS. Because he had a car, a good friend asked if he would drive to the airport and pick up an American coming for a visit. He didn’t know that trip would be a life changer. He spent every evening with the American friend. When she went back to the states he called her and proposed. She flew back to Scotland and set up residency. They were married on Valentine’s Day 1970. Fred fulfilled the requirements to become a US citizen in 1985. He started a contracting business in 1970 and continued to be the CEO until his retirement in 2008. That chance meeting with the “American” resulted in 55 years of happy times, 2 children, the start of a growing business, and a love that never ended. Fred is survived by his wife Susan, son Steve, daughter-in-law, Renee, and granddaughter Maggie. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Wilma Smith and son Dan Milne.
