Life Story / Obituary
Carl Deveaux Hipp, a devoted husband, father, educator, and friend, passed away at home on June 24, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born on May 29, 1946, in White Plains, New York, alongside his identical twin brother, Charlie.
Carl grew up in White Plains, where he spent much of his youth around his father’s auto body shop, developing a lifelong appreciation for craftsmanship, hard work and technology. Carl graduated from White Plains High School “Class of 1964” and promptly enlisted in the US Air Force where he proudly served for four years working with electronics. Following his military service, he pursued his education at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater and went on to complete graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin–Stout. He later moved to Racine where he would build a life defined by service, dedication, and community.
Carl devoted 42 years of his professional life to education as a special education teacher in the Racine Unified School District where he met many life long friends and his future wife. He was deeply committed to his students, known for his patience, kindness, and work ethic. Beyond his career, Carl was invested in hobbies and interests. He was the proud owner of a 1955 Thunderbird, which he cherished since 1965. He had a love for history, woodworking, and home renovation, becoming highly skilled and always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends. His steady presence, generosity, and reliability made him someone others could always count on. Carl also served on the board of the Racine Art Museum and was involved with the Olympia Brown Church, where he contributed his time and energy with care.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Johnson Hipp; his children, Alex Robert Hipp (Hannah Asiyanbi) and Erica Katherine Hipp (Tim Regan); his siblings, Mildred (Pat) Blackwell, Charles, Jr. (Charlie) Hipp, and Mary Marquis ; and many nieces, nephews, and loving cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Deveaux Hipp and Gertrude Deveaux Hipp, and his younger brother, Robert (Bobby) Hipp.
Carl will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his patience, and his willingness to help others at any moment. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched—as a teacher, a craftsman, a veteran, and a deeply loved family man.
