Charles J. “Chuck” Bragg, 82, was born on September 16, 1943, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Son of the late Julian and Irma Bragg, he was the youngest of nine children. Chuck passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, March 1, while preparing to go to church.

Chuck grew up along the banks of the Flambeau River, where the north woods instilled in him a lifelong love for the outdoors. He graduated from Ladysmith High School in 1961 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he met the love of his life, Jane. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Education, Chuck and Jane were united in marriage on June 26, 1965, at First United Methodist Church in Racine; a partnership that would span 60 years.

Chuck later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and dedicated his entire 33-year career to teaching mathematics at Horlick High School. A steady, patient, and principled educator, he impacted generations of students with his quiet wisdom, sense of humor, and commitment to teaching.

Family and friends were at the center of Chuck’s life. Chuck and Jane loved traveling and camping and took their children, Joel and Laurie, on countless road trips across the country. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Chuck especially loved his annual deer and duck hunting trips with friends. In retirement, he embraced time at the family’s vacation home in Stoddard, Wisconsin, and loved fishing for walleye, bluegill, and perch on the Mississippi River. He often joked that he was simply “getting free food for the family.” Back at home in Racine, Chuck was rarely far from a sudoku puzzle, always ready to work through a challenge with patience and focus.

Chuck believed deeply in service. He volunteered for many years with Racine Habitat for Humanity, forming lasting friendships while helping build homes. He also served faithfully as a trustee at First United Methodist Church, giving generously of his time and leadership to the church community.

Above all, Chuck was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved his family deeply and found his greatest joy in time spent together. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Jane; his son, Joel (Kelly) Bragg of Waterford, Wisconsin; and his daughter, Laurie (Robinson) Burgos of Verona, Wisconsin. He was a proud grandfather to Carson Bragg, Julian Bragg, Marin Bragg, Casilda (Brady) Rojas Bragg, Teodoro Rojas Bragg, Sami Rojas Bragg, and Alejandro Burgos Bragg. He is further survived by four brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends.

Visitation will take place at First United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 12, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, with funeral services to start at 11:30 am. Memorials to Racine Habitat for Humanity or one’s preferred charitable organization have been suggested.
