Life Story / Obituary

Doris M. (Freudenwald) Braun, age 96, passed away peacefully at her home on October 10, 2022. Doris was born in Caledonia on May 21, 1926, the daughter of Edwin and Johanna (nee:Baker) Freudenwald. She grew up on her family’s farm where she was a self-described tomboy and loved helping her dad.

After graduating from Horlick High School, Doris worked as a secretary for Dr. John Nickelson, which is where she met her future husband, Rudolph Robert ‘Bob’ Braun, who came into the office on an unplanned appointment. On May 29, 1948, they were united in marriage. Their marriage lasted almost 55 years until Bob’s passing in 2003.

Doris led a blessed life and was a woman of faith. It is rare to meet someone as authentic and true to themselves as Doris was. She worked up until the day she found out she was pregnant, and after that time she became a stay- at-home mother for her two daughters. She also enjoyed time bowling, golfing, traveling extensively in the US and Europe, family vacations up north, gardening, playing cards, and seeking out her favorite slot machines. In her later life, she was happiest with a garden pruner in her hand in whatever garden space she could find, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family.

Surviving are her two daughters, Jacquie Bridonneau of Conches, France and Judy Braun of Racine; four grandchildren, Nicolas, Yann, Kimberly, and Krissy; two great grandchildren, Theo and Chloe; and many extended family and friends, especially her dear friend Pete. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Joan, and her brother Don.

Our family sends a heartfelt “Thank you” to Dr. Dizadji, Karen Murillo NP, and the team at Aurora Home Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Visitation from 10-11:30 with service at 11:30. Private interment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Milwaukee Public Broadcasting (PBS), or the American Heart Association.
