A lifelong resident of Racine, Elroy Hammes passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the age of 98. Blessed with a loving marriage of 67 years, he will be deeply missed by his wife Doris, daughters Donna (Harvey), Janet, and Carrie (Ken); brother Dr. James R. (Barbara) Hammes, many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald and sister Vera. Elroy and his wife, Doris, were active ballroom dancers for 60 years. They also enjoyed fishing, golf, travel, nature, and cultivating their rose garden together. Elroy was a devoted husband and father. He was a lifelong employee of J.I. Case Co. Among his diverse interests and talents, he taught classes at the Racine Vocational Evening School. Elroy built the family home as a team with his wife and father. He was a founding member and created music venues for the Racine Ballroom dance group (Dance Set) for 25 years. Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday, March 22, at 1:30 pm, with memorial service to follow at 2:30 pm. Private interment. Family has suggested memorials in Elroy’s name to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
