Life Story / Obituary

Frank N. Egerton III, beloved father, grandfather, scholar, teacher, and activist, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on February 6, 1936, in Louisburg, North Carolina, Frank was the son of Frank N. Egerton Jr. and Pattie Plummer Macon Egerton. He grew up alongside his sisters, Patsy and Charlotte. While athletics weren't his passion, he found a lifelong home in the Boy Scouts, where his love of nature first began to flourish.

After high school, Frank worked as a guide at Mammoth Cave National Park before attending Duke University. His fascination with the natural world led him to positions as a naturalist at Sequoia National Park and later to graduate studies at North Carolina State University before transferring to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. There, he earned his Ph.D. in the history of science, focusing on the history of ecology—a field that would define his life's work.

Frank taught biology at Boston University, where he met Andrea Kahn, one of his students. The two were married on August 20, 1966, and shared nearly fifty years together before Andrea's passing in 2016.

After teaching at Carnegie Mellon University, Frank accepted a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside in Racine, where he taught the history of science from 1970 until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his career, he became a respected scholar and author, publishing numerous articles and several books on the history of ecology, botany, and science, including A History of the Ecological Sciences, Biography of an English Botanist, Guncrazy America, and other significant works that reflected his deep intellectual curiosity. His decades-long series of quarterly articles on the history of ecology earned him national recognition, and he was honored by the Ecological Society of America with its Eminent Ecologist Award for his lifetime of scholarship and contributions to the field.

Frank and Andrea made their home in Racine in 1970, where they became devoted members of Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church. Together they were active participants in the life of the congregation and formed many lasting friendships through their church community.

Frank never stopped learning. He remained remarkably active well into his later years, always reading, researching, and writing. He loved classical music and faithfully spent time each day listening to it, often from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. If you knew Frank, you knew he could always recommend a book—or several. His home reflected that passion, housing an extraordinary personal library of nearly 75,000 books.

Above all, Frank valued family. He is survived by his daughter, Rachel; his son, David; and his grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley. He is also survived by his sister, Charlotte; his nieces, Kathryn and Ellen; and his nephew, Blare. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Andrea; his sister, Patsy; and his parents.

Frank will be remembered for his sharp mind, quiet wit, unwavering curiosity, and generous spirit. He believed that knowledge was meant to be shared, and he spent his life doing just that—as a teacher, historian, author, mentor, father, grandfather, and advocate for the causes he believed in. His legacy lives on in his family, in his scholarship, and in the many people whose curiosity he inspired.

A Memorial Service celebrating Frank's life will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Tony Larsen officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Saturday at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 4:00 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the service.
