JoAnn Scales went home to be with the lord on July 13, 2015 with her husband at her side. JoAnn was born to the union of Joe and Alvalone Dawson on August 25, 1954, in Alamo, TN. She moved to Racine, WI at the age of 5 where she accepted Christ and joined Greater St. Luke's Baptist church under the leadership of the late Reverend E.E. Woods. JoAnn sang in the choir and continued her faith in God until her death. She attended Racine Public School, and was a graduate of Park High School class of 73. She was passionate about working with young children and their families and received a degree in Early Childhood Education from Gateway Technical College. JoAnn married Charles Scales in June of 1979; they moved to New Albany, MS in 1981. JoAnn was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church, Myrtle, MS under Rev. Anthony Ruffin, where she was an usher. For many years she did private childcare in her home. Her hobbies included sewing, playing computer games and being around her family and friends. JoAnn leaves to cherish the memory of her life her husband Charles Scales; mother Alvalone Dawson; children James(Elaine) Wilson and Chanel Scales; 6 grandchildren; brothers Calvin(Carmen) Payne, Austin (Marie) Dawson, Donald McGorn and Timothy (Ariva) Churchwell; sisters Lenora Lambright, Jessie (Henry) Riddle and Nikki Churchwell; brother-in-laws Robert (Daisy) and Benjamin Scales; Sister-in-law Hattie McKenzie and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Joe N and brothers Jersey, Jerry, Nate and Gregory Dawson. Funeral services will be held Monday July, 20 2015, 11 a.m., at Greater St. Luke's Baptist Church, 1326 State Street, with Rev. Joseph Pipes officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Monday from 10am - 11am.
