John Hewitt fought a determined battle against a brain tumor with grace and humor. A battle he unfortunately wasn't able to win. He succumbed on September 21, 2024, at Willowgreen Assisted Living. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara and brother James Hewitt.

John was born January 12, 1943, in Cortland, New York, while his parents were working there. They moved back to Racine, WI when he was an infant. He graduated from Washington Park High School in 1961, attended classes at U.W. Racine, (now Gateway), and Union Grove Teachers College. Johnny’s first love was swimming, and he worked at the YMCA teaching classes and coaching swim teams. He also was a lifeguard at 14th Street beach in Racine. He used that love of water and swimming at Camp Anokijig, where he was a counselor and swim instructor. Camp Anokijig became a favorite topic of discussion with everyone in the days and weeks before he passed away. Johnny enjoyed camp so much, he yearned for one more visit in the fall. I hope he is enjoying the memory of it where he is.

While working at the Y he met the love of his life, Barbara McQueen. She was a volunteer for Junior League. They were married August 19, 1967. While they weren’t blessed with children, they had three wonderful dogs who were loved like kids; Heidi, Christy, and Daisy. Barbara fought a hard battle with cancer as well and passed away in April 2003.

In 1965 John enlisted in the National Guard of Wisconsin. He was honorably discharged on March 2, 1971.

John spent most of his working career as an insurance agent, he always enjoyed working with and helping people. His dedication was to service organizations, and he was a member of the Greater Racine Kiwanis Club. Pancake Day was always one of his favorite endeavors.

When John retired from the insurance agency, he found another area to serve his community, the Mt. Pleasant Town Board. He was extremely proud of the work they accomplished and was the longest serving Trustee. He must have been well liked by the community; he never lost an election.

Johnny is survived by his sister, Midge (Bill) Green, sister-in-law, Judy Hewitt and brother-in-law Bob McQueen. Nephew; Chris Hewitt, Niece; Becky (Tim) Connors

Nephew; Jeff Green (Jenny Schaefer), Niece; Jeni (Ben) Williams, Nephew; Robert McQueen, Niece; Megan (Ben) McQueen Stewart and Niece; Kelly (Tony) Kotowicz

As well as several great nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A Memorial Service celebrating John’s life will be held at 11:30 am at the funeral home, Saturday September 28, 2024, with Rev. John Anderson officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to meet with the family for Visitation, 10:00 am until time of service at the funeral home. The family requests memorials be forwarded to Camp Anokijig.
