Mary Carita Hartin, 87, of Evansville, died peacefully on Friday, February 20th, 2015 at The Evansville Manor. Mary was born on May 7th 1927 in Elk Grove Township, the daughter of Marguerite (Burke) and Joseph Hoppenjan. Mary and her family grew up and worked on the family farm. She graduated from Shullsburg High School in 1944.

Mary graduated from Loyola University, of Chicago, School of Nursing at St. Elizabeth Hospital in 1948. Mary married Gordon R. Hartin on June 6, 1959. We will miss Mom’s strong initiative, warm smile, and gracious heart (along with her famous creamy chicken, creamed corn, and homemade cranberry sauce). Mary worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Janesville and in the dialysis unit of the UW Hospital, in Madison until she retired. Mary enjoyed golfing with family and friends. She and Gordy enjoyed their annual trips to the Port St. Joe in Florida for golf and seafood. Mary volunteered for Meals on Wheels and provided rides to Mass.

Mary has survived by her children Michael Hartin of Menomonee Falls, Patrick Hartin of Evansville, and Maurine Janke of Georgetown, Texas. She is survived by her sister Joan Abelt of Johnson Creek and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her husband; sisters, Irene, Marian, Ethel, Monica; and her brothers, Joseph, Paul, Jack, James, and Donald preceded her in death. Along with her niece Patricia and nephews, James “Rusty”, and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 39 Garfield Avenue, with Rev. Kevin Dooley officiating. Entombment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Thursday at the funeral home from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Memorials to St. Paul’s Catholic Church have been suggested.

A special thank you to Mary’s caregivers at Evansville Manor for their loving and compassionate care.
