Mary Lee Mickens

Mary Lee Mickens, age 99, passed away Monday, May 22, 2023, at The Manor in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She was born in Greensboro, Alabama, November 10, 1923, daughter of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Nee: Long) Diggins.

She spent her life in Greensboro and was a member of the Marshfield Baptist Church. In 2010, she moved to Racine, Wisconsin to be near her brother, Charles Diggins.

On August 30, 1946, she was united in marriage to Henry Mickens who preceded her in death July 15, 2006.

Mary will be remembered as a good cook and gracious host who invited everyone over to enjoy her soul food. She enjoyed sewing and singing. Above all Mary treasured time spent with her family and will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her son, Jerry T. “Scooter” Mickens; grandson, Kenneth W. Witherspoon both of Greensboro; sisters-in-law, Clara Diggins of Racine, WI, Mary Diggins of New York; special cousin, Nancy Lawson; special nephew, Andrew Diggins; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Daisey, Bertha, and Fannie Mae; 5 brothers, Andrew, Ivory, Ernest, Charles, and Morris.

She will be laid to rest at the Mickens Family Cemetery in Greensboro, Alabama. Graveside service will be held Friday, June 9, 2023, 11 am with Reverend Nathaniel Carter officiating.
