Life Story / Obituary

Print

Portia Rothschild, age 92, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at her home, the Elizabeth Residence, Racine, Wisconsin. Portia was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 19, 1923, daughter of the late Martin and Hilda (Nee: Strifling) Fox.

Portia devoted her life to her children and grandchildren and to unselfishly championing the rights of the underprivileged. While raising her three children she went back to college to obtain a bachelor’s degree and began teaching high school English. Seeking another challenge, she then obtained a Masters in Guidance and Counseling and for many years worked as a counselor at Muskegon Heights High School, Muskegon, Michigan. She was a life member of the NAACP, actively involved in The Urban League and an avid world traveler.

She will be dearly missed by her three children, Arthur (Vikki) Rothschild of Racine, Steven Rothschild of NY, Linda (George) Rothschild-Robb of Roslyn, PA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria Vogel; brother, Tom (Mickie) Fox; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 18, 2015, 4:00 P.M. at the Beth Israel Sinai Temple, 944 Main Street, Racine, WI. with Rabbi Dena Feingold officiating. Interment will follow at the Racine Jewish Memorial Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Sunday at the Beth Israel Sinai Temple from 3:00 P.M. until time of service at 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, Memorials to the A. Portia Rothschild Scholarship Fund of the Muskegon County Community Foundation, the Beth Hillel Temple, Kenosha, or Beth Israel Sinai Temple, Racine, have been suggested.

A very special thank you to Dr. Carol Potts, and to her caregivers at the Elizabeth Residence and Hospice Alliance for their loving and compassionate care.
