Life Story / Obituary
Richard James Berres, 82, of Kenosha, died Monday, March 30, 2015 at Hospice Alliance, Pleasant Prairie. He was born on December 5, 1932, in Racine, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late William and Corinne (Nee: Shute) Berres.
Richard attended Holy Name Grade School and St. Catherine’s High School in Racine. He graduated from the University Notre Dame where he received a B.A. in Sociology and Electrical Engineering. He earned his Master’s Degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
He proudly served in the United States Army from 1956-1958. Richard was assigned as a cryptographer to the Pentagon and SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers-Europe), Paris, France.
On October 11, 1958, he was married to Judith Weins at Holy Name Catholic Church, Racine. He and Judy lived in Milwaukee and Waukesha before moving to Kenosha in 1966. He served as Director of Kenosha Catholic Social Services for nearly three decades.
He is survived by his wife, Judith; one daughter, Susan Jean Berres (Rob Craighurst) of Charlottesville, VA; one son, John Robert Berres (Leslie Bardes) of Oconomowoc; three grandchildren, Lily Zhou-Mei Ji of Charlottesville, VA, Louise Bardes and George Bardes, both of Oconomowoc; one step-granddaughter, Laura Craighurst (John Perrigo) of Montana; sister, Nancy (James) Lathrop; sisters-in-law, Barb Berres, Jeanne Maushammer; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Berres and his godfather, Raymond Berres.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 7, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 7307 40th Avenue, with Rev. Roman Stikel officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Tuesday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of Mass at 11:00 A.M. Private interment will be held at Mound Cemetery, Racine. Memorials to Kenosha Achievement Center or Hospice Alliance have been suggested.
