Life Story / Obituary
Robert John Margis August 25, 1965 – February 21, 2025, It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Robert “Bob” John Margis, a lifelong resident of Racine, Wisconsin, on February 21, 2025, while vacationing in New Zealand with his devoted wife, Nancy.
Born in Racine on August 25, 1965, Bob was the son of William and Jeanne (Schwengel) Margis. A proud Eagle Scout, he enjoyed spending his time outdoors. He was known by his friends as an accomplished fisherman throughout Wisconsin. He participated in multiple golf leagues and enjoyed hiking and biking Wisconsin trails. Bob embraced every adventure with a quiet enthusiasm and gratitude for what he had.
For nearly 40 years, Bob dedicated himself to the Racine Public Library, where his passion and commitment shone as he served as Head of Circulation and then Interim Director. He spearheaded the initiative to eliminate late fees—ensuring the library remained a welcoming haven for all.
Bob and his wife, Nancy, both retired in 2021. Together they would frequent supper clubs, sporting events, concerts, local events and singing in the Spirit of Racine Choir. They loved traveling together, and they shared many memorable adventures over their 34 years of marriage.
A man of simple pleasures, Bob delighted in good food, films of every style, and music. His carefully curated library of over 40,000 hand-picked songs offered a unique glimpse into his creative spirit and mind. He was also committed to watching the Packers, Bucks, and Brewers and would frequent games whenever he was able. He was a true Wisconsin sports fan.
Above all else, he cherished his family. Bob will be remembered for his kind and compassionate nature. He was a reliable and loving father to Katie and Rachel and a very active “PapaBob” to Everett and Hudson. His gentle spirit and ability to bring warmth and joy to those around him was a gift. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and many fond memories that will continue to resonate with all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his wife, Nancy Margis; daughters Kathleen (Nathan) Panka and Rachel (JP Dentino) Margis; grandsons Everett Panka, Hudson Dentino and Sawyer Panka; mother Jeanne (Robert) Dierkes, stepmother Jacqueline Margis, brother Steven Margis, sister and brother in-laws and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, WIlliam Margis. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, son, and friend whose love and presence will be deeply missed. Bob’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service to honor Bob’s life and legacy will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, 11:00am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.2201 Northwestern Ave in Racine, WI. Relatives and friends may meet prior to the service from 9:00-11:00am.
