Life Story / Obituary

Sheila Ann Collentine (nee: Nevin) age 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 16, 2024, at Oak Ridge Care Center, Union Grove, Wisconsin. Sheila was born on May 2, 1926, in Racine WI to R.C. and Alice Wright Nevin.

She graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in 1944 and attended Carlton College, Northfield, MN and later, the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She met her husband Joseph Patrick Collentine (“Monk”) on a blind date on March 15, 1947, and they were married on October 30, 1948. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage before Monk’s passing in 2017.

Sheila’s quiet manner belied her enthusiasm for any adventure whether it was water skiing at age 65, traveling the world with Monk or even signing up and attending every outing and activity offered at the Pillars Assisted Care facility where she resided for many years. Sheila was an accomplished hostess and enjoyed entertaining guests at Monk and Sheila’s home. Everything from cookouts to formal parties were fun and lots of laughs.

Sheila will be remembered as a kind and gentle person who actively enjoyed life and the people around her. She was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts in Racine County serving as Board President from 1970-75. She was awarded the Girl Scout Thanks Badge for extraordinary service to the Scouts. She took the lead in organizing the Annual Family Camping outing at the Girl Scout Camp Singing Hills that included eight other families. She was active in the Junior League of Racine for many years. Sheila was one of the originators of the HiLo Dancers group and a member of the Taco Belles - a fun dinner group. She was also active in all parish activities at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Once her five children were out of the nest or old enough to be on their own, Sheila was employed by Porters of Racine where her refined taste in furniture guided many grateful customers.

She was preceded in death by her husband J.P. (Monk)Collentine and daughter Sheila Ellen Ryan. Sheila is survived by her children: Patricia (Bruce) Chevis, Timothy (Nancy), John (Cindi), William (Nancy) as well as ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sheila will be celebrated at St. Richard Catholic Church, 1509 Grand Ave., Racine, WI, Saturday, February 17, 2024, with Reverend Jose Mario Nieto officiating. Visitation with the family begins at 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast have been suggested by the family.
