Life Story / Obituary
Passed at home with her daughter Tammy by her side Friday May 9, 2025. Shelby was born in Lepanto, Arkansas on August 21, 1938, daughter of the late Wilburn and Pauline (nee: Franks) Barker.
Shelby who was also affectionately known as Stumpy and Buckwheat, was raised by her grandparents in Turrel Arkansas where she went to school and met her best friend Ann in the 4th grade. She picked cotton after school and chores. It was during 1956 that she contracted Tuberculosis and spent the next 2 years in a TB hospital. While in the TB hospital Ann, her boyfriend Kenny Bailey and his best friend David Scheit visited her. When David met Shelby it was love at first sight and he decided right then that she was the woman he was going to marry. On September 4, 1959, they were married in Racine and were blessed with 3 children, Terry, Cindy, and Tammy. Unfortunately, David passed away January 23, 1977.
In her pastime Shelby enjoyed crocheting, reading Devotions, cheering on her beloved Green Bay Packers, camping with family, traveling and road trips to Mississippi. Her favorite vacation was with her best friend Ann to Hawaii. Traveling the USA with William she would have him stop at every McDonald’s to collect Beanie Babies. She would also have him pull over to pick up rocks for her daughter Tammy. Shelby and her little side kick Rainy would fly to Texas twice a year to spend time with her daughter Cindy and family.
She was loved by many and will be remembered for her loving, caring, outgoing personality, beautiful smile, sparkle in her eyes and her sassiness. Above all Shelby treasured the time spent with her family. She was baptized on June 9, 2005.
Shelby will be dearly missed by her daughters, Cindy (Shane) Rindahl and Tammy Scheit; grandchildren, Shannon Scheit, Dahlia Scheit, David (Tiffany) Rindahl, Michael (Cassie) Rindahl; great grandchildren, Gretchen, Randy, and Tristan; brothers, Bill Barker, Charles Barker, Earl Barker; sisters, Bonnie Mace and Shirley King ; her lifelong best friend, Ann Bailey; in-laws, Susan Coey, Bruce (Pat) Scheit, Bob Scheit, Tom Scheit, Sue Scheit, Alice Dunlap, and Johnny Martin; numerous nieces, nephews, several close cousins, other relatives and friends. She is also survived and will be sadly missed by her precious little Rainy. In addition to her parents, Shelby was also preceded in death by her daughter, Terry Scheit; grandson, Morgan David Nabors; granddaughter, Carrie Jean Ann Garmin; great granddaughter, Athena; great grandson, David; siblings, Jerry Dunlap, Bobbie Martin, Karl Barker, Sue Wilson, Wilma Matthews, Margaret Jones; longtime companion, William Medlin; brothers-in-law, John Scheit, Wayne Coey; and sister-in-law, Linda Scheit and cousin, Jake Thomas.
