Life Story / Obituary
Sister Celia Evers, O.P., 89, passed away at Siena Center, Racine, on Wednesday October 23, 2024.
Cecilia Theresa was born October 12, 1935 to Martin H. and Mary (nee: Vander Loop) Evers in Little Chute, WI. On September 12, 1953 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1954 she was given the religious name Sister Martha. She professed her first vows in 1956 and her final vows in 1962. In 1968 she changed her name to Celia.
Sister Celia spent many years in service to others in teaching, retreat work and pastoral ministry. She began her ministry in 1957 at SS. Peter and Paul, Green Bay, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Patrick and Holy Trinity, Racine; St. Louis, Caledonia; St. Victor, Monroe; and St. John, Little Chute. From 1986-1998 she did retreat ministry and social outreach at the Ukweli Reflection Centre in Kisumu, Kenya East Africa. She also served in Detroit, MI; Kingstree, SC; and Rosedale, MS. When she became a resident at Siena Center in 2010 she served as sacristan for two years and then did community service.
Sister Celia is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers Norbert (Helen) Evers, Tom (Sue) Evers, and Reverend Leonard Evers; brother-in-law Joseph Dietzen and sisters-in-law Dorothy and Lois Evers; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Jerome (infant), Richard and Jerome and sisters Margaret, Cecilia, Bertilla, Martha Evers, Geraldine Theunis, Rose Dietzen and Margaret Christiaens.
A Remembering Service will be at 12:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. in the Siena Center Chapel on Monday October 28. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32 on Tuesday October 29. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Outreach have been suggested.
