Life Story / Obituary
Sister Irene McCarthy, O.P., 90, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine, WI, on Friday November 11, 2016.
Patricia Jane was born April 23, 1926 to Callahan J. and Genevieve (nee: Hartt) McCarthy in South Milwaukee, WI. On September 3, 1945 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1946 she was given the religious name Sister Irene. She professed her first vows in 1948 and her final vows in 1954.
Sister Irene spent many years in service to others as a music teacher. She began her ministry in 1948 at St. Mary’s, Janesville, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Augustine, Wausaukee; SS. Peter & Paul, Green Bay; St. Bernard, Madison; St. Luke, Plain; Cecelia Hall, Aquin Hall, and Sacred Heart, Racine. After moving to Racine in 1989 she continued to give music lessons at Siena Center and played the organ at various parishes in Racine. In October 2011 she became a resident of Becker Shoop Center, Racine and in May 2016 she moved to Lakeshore Manor, Racine.
Sister Irene is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her sister-in-law Betty McCarthy; 2 nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Thomas and James McCarthy.
Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Wednesday November 16, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.
