Life Story / Obituary
Sister Jean Ferstl, O.P., Age 83, passed away at Lakeshore at Siena, on July 8th, 2024.
Jean Margaret was born March 7, 1941 to Walter and Margaret (nee: Bindl) Ferstl in Plain, WI. On September 13, 1959 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1960 she was given the religious name Sister Vincent. She professed her first vows in 1962 and her final vows in 1968. In 1968 she returned to using her baptismal name, Jean.
Sister Jean spent many years in service to others in teaching and pastoral ministry. She began her ministry in 1964 at St. Catherine High School, Racine, WI. She was a Pastoral Associate at St. Rose, Racine and St. Luke/John the Baptist, Plain/Spring Green. In Lexington, KY she served as the Pastoral Associate at St. Peter Parish. After being the House Coordinator at Siena Center, Racine she became the Vice President of the Racine Dominicans from 1998-2002. In Racine she also served as the Director of the Racine Dominican Sponsorship Office; at the Eco-Justice Center and the Advocate for Sisters in Skilled Nursing Facilities. She moved to Siena Center in 2014. In January 2019 she became a resident of Lakeshore at Siena.
Sister Jean is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers, Henry (Judi) and Harlan (Jef) and her sister Margie Ferstl. She is further survived by nieces and nephews and many cousins.
A Remembering Service will be at 9:15am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am in the Siena Center Chapel on Friday July 12th, 2024. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Outreach have been suggested.
