Life Story / Obituary
Sister Mary Ann Pohl, O.P., 90, passed away at Siena Center, Racine, WI on Wednesday June 12, 2024. Mary Ann was born August 28, 1933 to Louis J. and Catherine (nee: Thelen) Pohl in Fowler, Michigan. On August 30, 1949 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1950 she was given the religious name Sister Bernard Ann. She professed her first vows in 1952 and her final vows in 1958. In 1968 she returned to using her baptismal name, Mary Ann.
Sister Mary Ann spent many years in service to others in food service and later as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She began her ministry in 1952 at Holy Name, Kimberly, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were Villa St. Anne, Oconomowoc; and St. Catherine Convent, Racine. She also served in Michigan at St. Clement Convent, Center Line. After becoming an LPN she served at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Racine from 1971-1998 and at Siena Center from 1998-2013. After retiring from nursing she volunteered in the Senior Companion Program. In 2006 she moved to Siena Center.
Sister Mary Ann is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brother Joseph (Marie); nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Norbert, Father Leon, Gerald and an infant brother; her sisters Sister Bernice Pohl, RSM, Sister Dorothy Pohl, O.P., Sister Bernadine Pohl, O.P. and Rosaline Smith.
A Remembering Service will be at 8:45am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in the Siena Center Chapel on Wednesday June 19th. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Outreach have been suggested.
The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the Supportive Living and the Hospice Alliance staffs who cared for Sister Mary Ann at Siena Center.
