Life Story / Obituary
Susan M. Ermert, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Susan was born in Racine on December 26, 1942, daughter of the late George R. and Marion (Nee: Bernhardt) Simanek and was a lifelong Racine resident.
Susan graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in 1960 and was united in marriage to James J. Ermert on November 28, 1964, at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church.
Susan was a longtime parishioner and former Parish Council member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church. She was employed for many years at Hans Hansen Furniture as an interior designer. Susan loved volunteering and giving back to the community. She spent many years serving as “room mother” and leading field trips for her children’s school outings and participated in the Girl Scouts,Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as her children got older. She enjoyed creating handmade works of art for her home and family, including beautiful needlepoint creations, hand-stitched quilts, and many holiday decorations which she gave to family and friends. She was also a Master Gardener and volunteered with the Potpourri Garden Club in Racine. Each year she grew dozens of plants which were then donated to the Garden Club for their annual plant sale to raise money for the community. And for the last twenty years she was an energetic volunteer with the Republican Party. Every election you could find her at the local GOP office, making phone calls, putting together yard signs, or just stopping by to bring in some treats for the volunteers. In 2009 she was given the Anita Hunt Award from the Racine County Republican Party for her dedicated volunteerism. But above all, she loved Christmas and time spent with her family. She was active in the lives of all her children and loved nothing more than seeing her grandchildren.
Survivors include her loving husband of sixty years, Jim; her children, Stephen (Kristine) Ermert, Susie Ermert (Travis Paquette), George (Jenny) Ermert; her grandchildren, Emma, Sam, and Nikki; siblings, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother George and sister Ann.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 10:30 a.m. at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church, 1903 Green Street with Rev. Craig Richter officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church have been suggested.
