William Joseph Smithana, affectionately known as Bill and lovingly called Grampy, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the age of 70. He was born in Racine, August 29, 1955, son of William and Francesca (Nee: Ricciardi) Smithana.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jean Cain; and his beloved rescue dogs, Luther and Bob.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; his sister, Christine Glover (Robert); his daughters, Kelly Langert (David) and Kristin Clinkenbeard; his adored grandchildren, Lucy (13), Daphne (11), and Calvin (7); and his cherished rescue dog, Lila Rose, who all brought him endless joy and pride.

Bill loved fishing, golfing, and spending time with dear friends—many of whom shared his journey through Fratt Elementary School, McKinley Middle School, Washington Park High School “Class of 1973”, and the University of Wisconsin–Parkside. He worked in financial services at Marquette University for nearly 30 years. Friendship and loyalty were central to his life, and those bonds remained strong throughout the years.

Just before Thanksgiving 2025, Bill was diagnosed with Bulbar Onset ALS. Despite this difficult diagnosis, he was deeply grateful to share two meaningful holidays surrounded by his children and grandchildren, moments he treasured and held close.

Bill will be remembered for his love of family, devotion to friends, and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association, so researchers can continue to better understand and treat this devastating disease.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Mike and Angelo’s, 6214 Washington Avenue, Monday, February 9, 2026, from 1-3 pm.

The family extends a thank you to Aurora at Home Hospice, and especially to the Claudia’s. Also thank you to all of Bill’s family and friends for your support and love during this difficult time.
